Altered Books and Art Journals for Young Writers, ages 10-13
Altered
Books and Art Journals are exciting creations which combine the
written word and image in ways that are deeply meaningful to the artist/writer.
They embody literacy, voice through authorship. As one discovers and explores
the inner voice and manifests it creatively, the joy of being an artist/author
is experienced.
Altered Books for Young Writers (ages 10-13): Altered
Books is a form of collage done in discarded books. Spreads are created
using a variety of art materials; whimsical hidden pockets are created
within the book, and images and the written word are combined in sometimes
purposeful, sometimes accidental, but always surprising and powerful ways.
In this
special class, each child will be provided with the instruction, materials,
as well as individualized images to create collage art spreads in their
book that relate to themes from their own writing, poetry, and/or interests.
(Kids should bring poems and excerpts from their writing that they are
interested in expanding through collage). These excerpts will become part
of their altered book art piece.
Art Journals (ages 10-13): In this workshop, we will
make art journals by hand. Using mat board and canvas to create the structure
of the journal, we will bind cardstock pages into our books, creating
a beautiful hand-made journal. Each page will be hand painted and/or collaged,
creating a personal masterpiece to paint, collage, and write in.
